A lot of new CMake features have been added recently, and you should download the latest 2.4. While many Linux distributions offer CMake, the version included is probably out of date. Because of these and other advantages over autotools, CMake was recently chosen as the configuration and build system for KDE4. Furthermore, both configuration and build commands are specified in one location and handled entirely by CMake. Unlike autotools, CMake can also create KDevelop, Visual Studio, and (Apple) XCode project files from the same configuration file.

Like autotools, CMake can generate a Unix Makefile. However, some projects have started to switch to other tools, such as Cross Platform Make, or CMake, which has several interesting features not found in autotools. Still, many open source projects use autotools as a build system. Moreover, autotools can grow so complex that additional tools, such as automake, are required just to manage the intricacies. How many times have you downloaded a source tarball only to find that your system’s version of autotools fails to work? While autotools is quite capable, variants abound, many of which are simply incompatible, and fixing autotools requires knowledge of at least make, m4, and shell scripting. Learn how to use CMake and see how KDE uses the tool for the project’s next generation build system. The audience for this book is the technical professional (IT consultants, technical support staff, IT architects, and IT specialists) who is responsible for providing file system management solutions and support for cross-platform environments that are based primarily on Power Systems. Here's an article I wrote for the July 2006 issue of Linux Magazine. The book provides answers to your complex file systems management requirements, helps you maximize file system availability, and provides expert-level documentation to transfer the how-to skills to the worldwide support teams.

It can help the technical teams provide file system management solutions and technical support with GPFS, based on Power Systems virtualized environments for cross-platform file systems management. This book examines the functional, integration, simplification, and usability changes with GPFS v3.4. With IBM GPFS, customers can have a planned foundation for file systems management for cross-platform access solutions. This IBM® Redbooks® publication provides a documented deployment model for IBM GPFS™ in a cross-platform environment with IBM Power Systems™, Linux, and Windows servers.
